Las aguas en la parte norte, expuesta a los sedimentos de la boca del río, son un poco más turbias que al otro lado y apenas pasan el metro de profundidad. En la parte sur llegan a 3 ó 4 metros de profundidad.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">En Chepillo hay un pueblo de pescadores, 237 personas según el censo de 2000. Hay dos quioscos, una iglesia y dos cantinas. El agua viene de un pozo municipal a través de un acueducto y es de muy buena calidad, pero a veces se va. Dependiendo de tu proveedor de servicio, se consigue señal de teléfono celular en la parte norte (C&amp;W) o por toda la isla (el otro).</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">De visita</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Aunque hay informes de gente que se ha quedado a dormir tirada en la arena, acampar en la playa no es sencillo debido a que está completamente tomada por los cangrejos. Especialmente en la noche, los cangrejos se trepan por las piernas y hay que andar echándolos a un lado por donde uno camine. Si pones la tienda en la arena, vas a andar sintiendo cangrejos caminando por debajo toda la noche. Por otro lado suena como que con una buena roca y una fogata se puede gozar de una buena fuente de comida.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Un lugar para alojarse es la casa de la señora Vicenta (tel. 267-5208), con tres recámaras con espacio para unas 14 personas, cocina, agua, servicio de hueco, totuma y tanque para bañarse, y un segundo piso con balcones y buena vista. Llama un par de días antes para que preparen la casa y hasta pueden arreglar transporte. El precio está alrededor de los B/.60 por el fin de semana.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Un paquete más acabadito serían las Eco-cabañas Cimarrón, en La Angostura, hacia el sur de la isla, a 10 minutos de camino. Este sitio está dirigido más que nada a eco-turistas que hacen pesca deportiva, observación de aves y demás actividades. Pueden alojar grupos de hasta 10 personas en su única cabaña (están esperando el permiso para construir 5 ó 6 más), dotadas de agua de pozo filtrada, regadera, lavamanos y servicio sanitario. Ellos pueden organizarte el transporte desde la ciudad o desde Coquira y giras completas a sitios del este de Panamá. También tienen un sitio para acampar. Llama al 6620 7116.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Surf</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">En Chepillo se pueden surfear dos olas, pero en realidad es la derecha ubicada en la parte oeste de la isla donde se encuentra la no muy famosa pero perfecta ola de Chepillo. La ola revienta con la marea media alta y tiende a romper desde los 3 pies hasta 8 sin cerrarse. Tiene un tubo que se genera inmediatamente despues de realizado el “drop”. En una junta decidieron cambiarle el nombre a Veracruz. Igual, ya hace tiempo que acabaron con los camarones en esta playa.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Veracruz es la comunidad costeña más cercana a la Ciudad de Panamá y uno de los destinos turísticos más visitados del país. Parte del distrito de Arraiján y adyacente a la antigua base militar de Howard, esta es una playa abierta y diversa, con un panorama hermoso, a lo largo de un pueblo con una gran historia de inmigración, lucha y trabajo, hoy habitado por unas 20 000 personas.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Estacionándose el fin de semana</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Venado es lo más fácil un sábado o un domingo en la tarde para un citadino con poco dinero y ganas de ver gente y comer pescado frito con patacones. En efecto, los fines de semana Veracruz se vuelve bastante concurrida. Hay decenas de locales con diversos tipos de comida y los vendedores ambulantes ofrecen ceviches, huevos de codorniz, sao, artesanías e incluso huevos de tortuga ilegales.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">A los vendedores de huevos de tortuga vale la pena recordarles que esta actividad es ilegal.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Muchos visitantes llegan en sus carros, los cuales se estacionan uno al lado del otro en la playa Venado desplegando sus equipos de sonido al unísono o en competencia. El acto de estacionar el carro, sacar las pintas y escuchar música en grupos se conoce en Panamá como “parquear” y Veracruz es un lugar excelente para contemplar y participar de esta gregaria actividad.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">En la marea baja se puede caminar a la Isla Venado, un morro lleno de árboles justo al principio de la playa. El mar se llena de niños y grandes, bajo la mirada de los salvavidas. A pesar de la cercanía con el mar contaminado frente a la Ciudad de Panamá, la gente de Veracruz dice que es seguro nadar en estas aguas y muchos visitantes se bañan sin pensarlo dos veces. [estudios sobre calidad de agua]</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">El parqueo llega a su fin a las 6 de la tarde, cuando se oculta el sol y la policía pasa sacando a los carros de la playa.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Los dueños de los locales en playa Venado se han organizado para mantener la playa limpia, pero como en cualquier lado, todo depende de ti: recuerda llevar bolsas de plástico para recoger la basura al retirarte. Lo último que necesita esta o cualquier playa es otro turista tirando basura en la arena. Aún mejor, separa las latas de aluminio en una bolsa aparte y déjala a la vista para que la recoja alguno de los clasificadores de desechos que trabajan en el área.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Aunque la gran mayoría de la gente va y viene sin problema, Veracruz tiene para algunos fama de ser peligrosa de noche. Hay algo de cierto: a veces le roban a algún borracho que ande caminando solo y se recomienda andar en grupos grandes si se quiere ir a la playa de El Chumical.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Además hay un par de bandas en Veracruz y otras venidas de afuera que a veces gustan de expresarse detonando sus armas los fines de semana cuando se embriagan, especialmente al final del día. Pero entre tanta gente, y si se pela el ojo, las probabilidades de un incidente son muy bajas. En todo caso el centro de salud está abierto las 24 horas y probablemente están acostumbrados a sacar proyectiles con los ojos cerrados.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">La base</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Durante el siglo 20 la historia del pueblo de Veracruz estuvo estrechamente ligada con la cercana base militar gringa. Howard era una base de la fuerza aérea de EE.UU. que empezó a operar durante la segunda guerra mundial. En su tiempo fue el sitio de mayor importancia para el poderío aéreo gringo en Centro y Sur América, desde donde se lanzaron múltiples misiones. Y se aferraron a esta base hasta el final: a pocos años que les tocaba retirarse surgió la idea de crear un “centro antidrogas” que les permitiera retenerla. Pero la oposición a la idea en Panamá y la estrepitosa derrota del entonces presidente Ernesto Pérez en el referéndum de 1998 sobre la reelección presidencial enterraron la idea y los gringos terminaron por irse de aquí el 1° de noviembre de 1999.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Ahora se puede observar la pista de aterrizaje, de 2.5 kilómetros de largo, que corre exactamente de norte a sur, a pocos metros de la carretera de Veracruz. El terreno de la antigua base militar todavía provoca un cierto respeto por parte de los residentes. Desde la calle se puede ver la pista hacia el otro lado y el antiguo letrero de “no trespassing” de aquellos tiempos.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Poco después de la pista está el terreno que solía ser el campo de prácticas de paracaidismo de la base y otro triste ejemplo del legado dejado por las actividades militares estadounidenses en Panamá: aquí se pretendía construir un vecindario llamado “Nuevo Veracruz”, pero los obreros que limpiaban el terreno se encontraron con tantos explosivos sin detonar que los trabajos tuvieron que detenerse.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Cuando no hay turistas</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Los días de semana Veracruz es un pueblo muy tranquilo y un lugar ideal para pasar un rato de silencio en la playa. Es posible hallarse totalmente sólo en la larga playa que viene después de Venado, frente a una vista hermosa de la costa del Pacífico en esta parte de la Bahía de Panamá, donde se puede ver desde taboguilla hasta Punta Chame, incluyendo cerro Trinidad y cerro Campana tierra adentro. Para apreciar mejor la vista se puede subir al cerro Cabra (xxx metros, unas dos horas para llegar a la cima) o a alguna de las colinas más accesibles.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Para algo menos turístico que los bohíos en playa Venado se puede ir a comer a alguna de las fondas en el pueblo mismo. Pasando la gasolinera Delta, entrando a la izquierda hacia la terminal de buses y doblando a la derecha está el kiosco “El Milagro”, un lugar favorito de los veracruzanos que sirve comida por B/.1.50 a 2.50. El pescado y los mariscos son sacados del mar y enviados directamente a la olla de la señora Toña, que lleva muchos años de atender esta fonda y muchas historias que contar. Al ir pide el “agua de masa”, una bebida de maíz dulce que se hace después de moler el maíz para las tortillas, no muy fácil de conseguir en otros lugares.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Justo al lado de la fonda de la Sra. Toña están los locales para comprar pescado fresco y mariscos directamente de los pescadores, como debe ser. Aparte de los pescadores, mucha gente del pueblo viaja todos los días a la ciudad a trabajar, mientras otros viven del turismo o la agricultura. El pueblo tiene varias barriadas, una de las cuales es Koskuna, una comunidad kuna en el lado este del pueblo. Koskuna fue fundada oficialmente en 1987 por inmigrantes indígenas tras años de ocupar el espacio ilegalmente.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Aquí, como en cualquier comunidad costera, hay mucha gente con quién conversar, muchas historias por contar y mucho que aprender.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Veracruz sufre de varios problemas, y sigue luchando por resolverlos: Insuficiente suministro de agua, la falta de ocupación de los jóvenes, la no existencia de una red de alcantarillado e irregularidades en la recolección de la basura. La carretera a veces se deja de mantener y se llena de huecos.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Hay historias inspiradoras: en diciembre de 2006 se graduaron unos 800 veracruzanos de un programa conjunto del Despacho de la Primera Dama con el Comité de Turismo de Veracruz que han sido entrenadas en diversos oficios relacionados con el turismo. Por su cercanía a los centros urbanos de Parita y Chitré, es un sitio de fácil acceso donde podemos aprender mucho los amantes de la naturaleza: Sarigua es hoy un testimonio de la capacidad humana para acabar con su ambiente.<span id="more-79"></span></div><div style="color: #333333; font-family: 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Hace años la empresa Acuícola Sarigua, S.A. instaló un enorme estanque de camarones, protegido en el lado del desierto por un guardia armado que impide el paso a la costa. La vista para ese lado es la más espectacular, pero no te dejan pasar.</div><div style="color: #333333; font-family: 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Pero Sarigua es mucho más que camaroneras. Es un sitio que a pesar de tener fuertes erosiones y es una excelente muestra de lo que puede hacer la mano del hombre por destruir la naturaleza, ya que el sitio es utilizado desde tiempos precolombinos.</div><div style="color: #333333; font-family: 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">A pesar de todo se puede apreciar buena representación del bosque seco tropical y su fauna. Existen facilidades como un Centro de Visitantes de ANAM y una torre de observación lo mismo que un lugar para merendar. Se pueden apreciar también restos de culturas precolombinas como cerámicas y puntas de flechas y grandes montículos de conchas de moluscos, los cuales eran parte de la dieta de los antiguos habitantes indígenas de los tiempos precolombinos, pero no se permite recogerlas. También hay un sendero con los nombres de especies de árboles.</div><div style="color: #333333; font-family: 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Lleve sus lentes oscuros, sombrero y su buena botella de agua. Recuerde no dejar basura, ni recolectar nada del sitio.</div><div style="color: #333333; font-family: 'Bitstream Vera Sans', 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Ten cuidado si vas en carro dónde lo estacionas. Debido a lo plano del terreno la marea sube muy rápido, puedes verla avanzar sin detenerse, es muy interesante. Salpimentar al gusto. Agregar el pollo picado. Cerrar la bolsa herméticamente y mover para que el pollo se cubra de la harina.<br /><br />En una olla amplia a fuego alto calentar el aceite de oliva. Sacar el pollo de la bolsa y dorarlo.<br />Toma como 8 minutos. Luego agregar la cebolla y el ajo, sofreír 1 minuto.<br /><br />Añadir el coñac o brandy y cocinar 2 minutos. Agregar los tomates con el jugo que traen, la pasta de tomate, el tomillo, las hojas de laurel y el caldo de pollo. Salpimentar al gusto. Bajar el fuego a bajo y cocinar tapado por 15 minutos. Luego agregar los hongos y los camarones. Revolver bien y cocinar 6 minutos más. Rectificar la sazón.
